Confirm whether a suspect material contains asbestos
Jersey Asbestos Limited can arrange the analysis of suspect asbestos-containing materials to identify whether the material contains asbestos fibres and, if so, which type of asbestos is present. Only with reliable analysis can the sampled material be dealt with in the correct manner.
Samples of suspect materials can be taken, with analysis undertaken by a UKAS ISO 17025 accredited laboratory. Results are returned in our report together with the laboratory’s Asbestos Bulk Analysis Certificate.
Do not take unnecessary risks
Breaking or cutting a suspect material can release fibres. If you are unsure, avoid disturbing it and contact us so the material and surrounding circumstances can be assessed.

When bulk sampling is appropriate
Sampling can answer a focused question about a specific accessible material. It does not replace a full management or refurbishment survey where information is required across a building or before intrusive works.
If several areas or materials may be affected, we will help determine whether a survey is the safer and more useful approach.

Can I bring or post a sample?
Please contact us before handling suspect material. We will explain the safest and most appropriate sampling arrangement for the circumstances.
Does a negative sample prove the whole building is asbestos-free?
No. A result relates to the sample analysed. Other areas or materials may differ, which is why a properly scoped survey may be needed.
Jersey legal framework
Asbestos duties in Jersey sit within the Health and Safety at Work (Jersey) Law 1989 and the asbestos-specific Management of Exposure to Asbestos in Workplace Buildings and Structures: ACoP 8 (revised 2020). The Management of Health and Safety at Work: ACoP 14 provides wider risk-management guidance and operates alongside ACoP 8; it does not replace the asbestos-specific code. The Asbestos-Licensing (Jersey) Regulations 2008 apply to work with specified higher-risk asbestos materials.
