Practical awareness for people who may disturb asbestos

Our asbestos awareness course is designed to support employers in providing suitable information, instruction and training under the Health and Safety at Work (Jersey) Law 1989 and Jersey’s asbestos ACoP 8 (revised 2020). Relevant UK HSE guidance is also used where it supports good practice.

The course gives participants an understanding of asbestos types, applications, health effects, legislation, recognition of asbestos-containing materials and the correct procedures to follow.

Course details

  • Approximately 90 minutes
  • At your premises, our premises or on site
  • Before, during or after normal working hours
  • £55 per person, minimum four attendees
  • PDF certificate on completion

Who should attend?

The course is aimed at people whose work may disturb the fabric of a building, including:

  • General maintenance workers and construction workers
  • Electricians, plumbers, joiners and plasterers
  • Painters, decorators, roofers and shopfitters
  • Gas, heating and ventilation engineers
  • Demolition workers
  • Telecommunications, fire alarm and data installers
  • Architects and building surveyors
  • Estate agents and property managers

Other occupations may also encounter asbestos. The appropriate training depends on the work people undertake and whether they will intentionally work on asbestos-containing materials.

Flexible delivery with minimal disruption

Our Asbestos Awareness course can be delivered before, during or after normal working hours, at your premises, our premises or on site. The approximately 90-minute format reduces staff time away from work while ensuring participants understand current Jersey requirements and recognised good practice.

Awareness training should be reviewed regularly and refreshed at suitable intervals—commonly annually—and sooner where work methods, responsibilities, guidance or knowledge change.

For the Health and Safety Inspectorate’s guidance, see Asbestos awareness on gov.je.

Frequently asked questions

Does awareness training allow someone to remove asbestos?

No. Awareness training helps people avoid disturbing asbestos and respond correctly if they encounter suspect material. It does not qualify participants to carry out asbestos work.

Can the course be delivered for one company?

Yes. We can arrange a dedicated session for your team, subject to the minimum attendance requirement.
